Your "Calling" is How Your Soul Expresses; Not What You Do
That feeling…that quiet but insistent pull, that’s a calling.
Today, we’re talking about calling.
Remember, Your purpose is who you become through your pain, your experiences, and your life lessons. It’s the wisdom you carry after you’ve lived, felt, and healed.
Your soul is that living, breathing energy inside you.
The part of you that guides you during this earthly experience.
And your calling is how that soul wants to move through you in this lifetime.
It’s how it expresses.
How it wants to taste life.
How it pulls you toward what you’re meant to experience.
That Pull You Couldn’t Explain
Your calling calls you.
It magnetizes you toward certain people, places, adventures, and even professions.
Think back to a time when you couldn’t explain why you wanted something.
A trip you felt pulled toward….A person you were drawn to.
A job or opportunity, or experience that didn’t fully make sense on paper.
And yet… something inside you said yes anyway.
That feeling…that quiet but insistent pull, that’s a calling.
Calling doesn’t only mean a profession or a sacred mission.
Sometimes it’s for growth, a life lesson or simply because your soul desires it.
What Calling Looks Like in the World
When I think about calling, especially the unexplainable energy of it, I think of surfer dudes living out of their vans.
Barely scraping by.
Parents worrying.
People judging.
And yet all they care about is being in the water.
Why?
Because something in their heart is pulling them toward the waves.
Toward the rush and the serenity they feel there.
Nothing else matters.
People May Question Your Decisions
I think about people who are trained as doctors or lawyers, only to leave it all behind to open a small restaurant or pastry shop.
People probably judged them.
Questioned them.
Reminded them how much money they spent on school.
And still… something in their soul said, I have to do this.
That’s a calling.
A gravitational pull toward something your soul wants to express.
And when you resist it long enough, it often shows up as pain, sadness, or a quiet depression you can’t quite name.
Because you’re living in opposition to what your soul is pulling you toward.
From Calling to Sacred Work
Now that we’ve grounded what calling actually is, I want to be clear about how we’ll talk about it moving forward.
From here on, when we talk about calling, we’ll be talking about sacred missions.
Being of service.
Sharing your gifts.
Expressing your creativity.
Contributing something meaningful to the world.
Because there’s something in you that wants to leave this place better than you found it.
You’re More Than Just An Employee
And if your soul has been pulling you toward helping others in some way but you’re still sitting at a 9–5 pretending you’re “just an employee”, that can hurt.
For some of you, it shows up as heartbreak.
For others, sadness.
For others, a low-grade depression you haven’t been able to explain.
Some of you already know it’s connected to not answering the call.
And some of you may only be realizing that right now.
What I’m Not Saying (And What I Am)
I am not saying quit your job.
What I am saying is this:
Start making space.
Space to acknowledge the calling.
Space to explore how you can continue providing for your life and household while also preparing your mind, body, and possibly your business to share your gifts.
This is about honoring both your livelihood and your soul.
One step at a time.
Much love,
Essence
